One Person Killed, Another Injured in Street Racing Incident in South Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 13, 2019) – One person was killed and another was injured in a street-racing crash in South Los Angeles on Sunday night. The May 12 incident occurred on 131st Street in the 300 block of the Willowbrook neighborhood.
The time was roughly a bit before 10:30 p.m., Patrick Kimball said. Kimball is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say two vehicles had been racing, and one of them crashed into a third vehicle. The collision killed a person who was not one of the street racers, and injured another person who was also not part of the race.
According to Kimball, when officers responded to the accident scene, they saw a Toyota Camry and an Infiniti SUV. One victim—identified only as a woman—was pronounced deceased at the accident site. The second victim—who has not been identified—suffered injuries that were described as major. The current condition of the second victim is not known.
Two drivers, according to investigators, had been traveling west at a high speed, and one of the vehicles ran through a stop sign. The vehicle smashed into another vehicle—which had been traveling southbound on Towne Avenue—in the intersection, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The people who had been traveling in the racing vehicle that smashed the vehicle of the victims fled the accident scene in the vehicle that contained the other racers. The vehicle the suspects fled in may have been a Honda, red in color.
The collision also caused damage to two vehicles that had been parked on the street. The vehicles have not been described.
