Multi-vehicle Collision Involving Driver Fleeing Police Causes Injuries in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 15, 2019) – Multiple vehicles collided on Wednesday night when a driver, fleeing police, crashed in a San Fernando Valley intersection. The August 14 crash occurred in the Valley Village neighborhood of Los Angeles, where Riverside Drive and Colfax Avenue intersect.

The time was roughly a little after 9:15 p.m., according to Josh Rubsenstein. Rubenstein is a spokesperson with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Reports say the incident unfolded when authorities saw a vehicle that was connected with a warrant for a person who was wanted on armed carjacking. Authorities began watching the vehicle in Pacoima at roughly 5:30 p.m., in the vicinity of Montague Street and San Fernando Road, according to Tony Im. Im is an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.

According to Rubenstein, police tracked the vehicle—described as a Toyota Prius—for hours. They then initiated pursuit at roughly 9:15 p.m.

After a five-minute chase, in which the vehicles traveled at fast speeds, the suspect’s vehicle crashed. Reports say the Prius went through an intersection and struck another vehicle’s front end. The vehicle that was struck spun out and struck another vehicle’s front end.

The vehicles that were struck have not been described, and the drivers have not been identified.

Reports say five people had been traveling in the second car that was hit; one person in the first vehicle struck; and one person in the Prius. Several victims were reported injuries, though it is not clear exactly how many.

The types of injuries suffered, and the current condition of each of the victims, has not been reported. The identities of the people involved have also not been reported. One of the victims may have been a child.

The suspect driver—identified only as a male in his 30s—was arrested. Investigators are working to gather information and evidence to understand the incident’s circumstances.
