Hit-and-run Driver Severely Injures Bicyclist on Vernon Avenue in South Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CA (March 29, 2019) – A bicyclist who was riding on Vernon Avenue in South Los Angeles was struck and severely injured by a hit-and-run driver early in the morning on Thursday. The March 28 accident occurred in the Central-Alameda area, close to Compton Avenue.
The time was roughly 5:20 a.m.
Reports say the bicyclist had been traveling east on Vernon Avenue, and a vehicle—that was heading the same way—struck the bicycle’s rear end. The impact threw the bicyclist, and he landed on the road. Investigators said the man who was driving the vehicle—described as a Toyota Corolla, white in color—left the scene and did not stop.
Respondents arrived and took the victim, whose injuries were described as severe, to the hospital. He was identified as 45 years old, and his name is Esteban. His family asked that his surname not be released for privacy reasons.
Reports say investigators, who had the license plate number of the vehicle, found the registered owner of the Toyota. The car’s owner was not in the car at the time of the incident. The owner of the vehicle, who is cooperating with the investigation, said to investigators that the person driving the vehicle was employed by her. The driver had been doing an errand for work when the crash happened, Juan Campos said. Campos is a detective.
The suspect hit-and-run driver was identified as Jose Miguel Mendez Lopez. According to reports, Lopez is alleged to have phoned his employer to tell her he had been in an accident, and that he was hiding at a location not disclosed. Investigators are searching for him. A description of Lopez indicates he is Latino, roughly 35 years of age, and he has brown eyes and black hair. He is 5 feet 6 inches in height, and roughly 170 pounds.
