Man, who was Struck by a Hit-and-Run Driver in Los Angeles, is Now Brain-Dead
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 29, 2019) – Emilio Perez, who was struck and critically injured by a hit-and-run driver in Los Angeles last week, has been pronounced brain-dead by authorities. The November 21 incident occurred in the Pico-Union area of Los Angeles.
The time was 10:45 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Reports say Perez had been walking in the vicinity of Lake Street and Olympic Boulevard and a vehicle—described as a Tesla—hit him. The impact of the crash threw Perez roughly 50 feet across the street.
Responders transported Perez to a hospital. His condition was critical. Authorities have pronounced Perez brain-dead. Perez is 34 years old.
According to Moses Castillo, who is a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, the person driving the vehicle did not stop to help the victim, and fled the incident site.
Investigators made public video from a surveillance camera that recorded the incident. After its release, authorities received a tip about a Tesla, white in color, that had been damaged and parked on South Saint Andrews Place in the 1800 block. The damaged vehicle had been covered.
Reports say the video recorded a woman placing a cover on the Tesla, and then driving away in a different vehicle. According to investigators, the Tesla had been rented.
Investigators located a woman as a person of interest, reports say. She was identified as Vanessa Gutierrez, 35 years old, and a resident of Los Angeles.
Investigators identified another woman in connection with the incident. She was identified as Destini Williams.
According to police, one of the women, and possibly both, had been in the vehicle when the crash occurred. Investigators said that Gutierrez and Wiliams had been at a restaurant or bar together before Perez was struck. Reports also say some witnesses had seen two people in the vehicle that hit Perez.
Investigators are continuing to gather details and evidence regarding the crash.
