Driver Suspected of DUI Hits Officer in Patrol Vehicle in South Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 11, 2020) – A driver who is suspected of DUI hit a police patrol vehicle on Monday afternoon in South Los Angeles, injuring an officer. The August 10 incident occurred in the vicinity of South Broadway and West 93rd Street.

The time was roughly 5:30 p.m., according to Mike Lopez. Lopez is a spokesperson with Los Angeles Police.

Officers had arrived in the area in response to a report of a man who was barricaded with a gun. Reports say a SWAT team also arrived at the site. Authorities took the suspect into custody, but details regarding the incident have not been reported.

While an officer was in a patrol vehicle at the perimeter of the barricade, a vehicle struck the patrol vehicle. Responders took the injured officer to the hospital. The types of injuries suffered, and current condition, are not known. The officer has not been identified in reports.

According to Lopez, the driver of the vehicle that struck the patrol vehicle was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI. The identity of the person, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.

Investigators are collecting information regarding the crash.
