Car Crashes into Challenge of Faith Church in South Los Angeles; Driver Flees

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 8, 2019) – A car crashed into the Challenge of Faith Church in South Los Angeles’ Florence neighborhood in the early morning on Friday. The February 8 accident occurred on East Manchester Avenue in the 1000 block.

The time was roughly 1:00 a.m.

Reports say that a vehicle—described as an SUV—had crashed into the building’s side. Alex Wynn, who is a deacon with the Challenge of Faith Church, said he answered a call early in the morning that alarms at the church were sounding. Wynn said he went to the church and found the vehicle, which had crashed into the building.

According to reports, at the time of the crash, no one was in the building. The crash damaged the building, and debris was tossed among the pews to the rear of the church. Wynn said the accident on Friday morning was not the first incident in which a vehicle hit the building. In an earlier incident, roughly twelve years ago, another vehicle came through the front of the church. Wynn said no one had been inside the church when that accident occurred.

The person who was driving the vehicle that crashed on Friday morning did not remain at the accident scene. If anyone has information about the accident, he or she is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department.

No details are available as to what led to the crash. Investigators are continuing their examination of the incident.
