Long Beach Wrong-way Collision on 405 Freeway Kills Two People, Injures Four Others

LONG BEACH, CA (November 2, 2020) – Early in the morning on Saturday in Long Beach, a wrong-way collision involving as many as 10 vehicles killed two people and injured four others. The October 31 incident occurred on the 405 Freeway in the southbound lanes, close to Studebaker Road and to the north of it.

The time was roughly 3:50 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

A vehicle–described as a Nissan–was traveling against traffic, going the wrong way on the freeway. A Toyota was struck by the Nissan, killing both drivers.

The driver of the Toyota was identified only as a resident of Long Beach, 32 years hold. His name has not been reported.

The driver of the Nissan was identified only as a resident of Los Angeles, 23 years old. Her name has not been reported.

The wreckage of the two vehicles in the freeway’s traffic lanes led to eight additional crashes, all within moments of each other. The other eight vehicles that were involved in the chain-reaction crashes have not been described.

The drivers of the other eight vehicles have not been identified. No passenger has been identified.

Responders arrived and transported four people to local hospitals, Jake Heflin said. Heflin is a public information officer with the Long Beach Fire Department.

Responders examined five other people involved in the crash; they were not taken to a hospital.

Investigators are working on the collision details and information.
