Suspect Fleeing Police After Long Beach Robbery Hits and Kills Pedestrian

LONG BEACH, CA (May 27, 2020) – Late at night on Tuesday, a suspect who was fleeing police after a robbery in Long Beach struck and killed a pedestrian. The May 26 incident occurred close to where Chestnut Avenue and West 6th Street intersect.

The time was roughly 11:10 p.m., according to Lt. Brown, who is with the Long Beach Police.

Reports say officers arrived at the scene of the suspected robbery, described as a pot shop located on West Gaylord Street in the 2100 block. As officers were arresting three suspects outside of the building, a fourth robbery suspect entered a vehicle and fled the site.

A person who had been walking across the road was struck by the fleeing robbery suspect. According to reports, video recorded at the site captured the pedestrian going across the road while walking a dog when the vehicle struck.

The victim was killed in the crash. The identity of the person, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported. It is not known if the dog was killed.

The suspect did not stop to help the victim. The suspect crashed not long after, close to where North Locust Avenue and East 6th Street intersect. Officers took the suspect, whose identity has not been reported, into custody.

Authorities arrested a fifth person suspected of robbery outside the of the building, and two others who are suspected of robbery who were inside the building. The suspects were all identified as men. Their names, ages, and cities of residence have not been reported.

Investigators are working to gather information and details regarding the fatal crash, and the robbery.
