Family Struck and Killed in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, CA (November 4, 2019) – Raihan Dakhil, Joseph Awaida, and their young son Omar were walking on a sidewalk in the evening on Halloween in Long Beach when they were struck by a driver suspected of DUI. All three family members suffered fatal injuries in the October 31 incident, which occurred on Country Club Drive.
Reports say the three victims had been on the sidewalk and in an area close to Los Cerritos Park when they were hit by a vehicle—described as a Toyota Sequoia. Responders took the three victims to a hospital; at the time, their condition was described as critical.
According to reports, Joseph Awaida died the morning after the incident. He was 30 years old.
Omar died on Saturday from his injuries. He was three years old.
Raihan Dakhil died from her injuries on Sunday at night, according to Rico Fernandez. Fernandez is a lieutenant with the Long Beach City Police Department.
The person who had been driving the vehicle involved in the incident was identified as Carlo Navarro. He is 20 years old. His city of residence has not been reported.
Authorities arrested Navarro on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI), and gross vehicular manslaughter. Investigators are continuing their work of gathering details and information regarding the incident.
