Multiple Crashes on 405 Freeway in Long Beach Cause Injuries, Including CHP Officer

LONG BEACH, CA (September 16, 2019) – On Friday night, multiple crashes on the 405 Freeway in Long Beach caused injuries, including to a California Highway Patrol officer who was responding to an accident site on his motorcycle. The September 13 incidents occurred on both sides of the freeway.

At roughly 10:00 p.m., a crash happened on the freeway’s northbound side near Woodruff Avenue. That accident caused fatal injuries.

A subsequent crash occurred on the freeway’s southbound side near Century Boulevard. That incident occurred not long after the first crash.

None of the vehicles involved in the two incidents have been described. The drivers involved have not been identified, and it is not known if there were any other occupants in the vehicles involved. The fatality has not been identified.

Reports say an officer with the California Highway Patrol had been on his way to respond to another collision that occurred on the offramp for Lakewood when, for reasons that are not known, his motorcycle went out of his control. The officer hit a divider in the center of the road.

The officer suffered injuries that were described as serious, including to his chest and his legs, according to Jose Barrios. Barrios is also an officer. The victim was identified only as a sergeant who is with the South Los Angeles office of the California Highway Patrol. He has served as an officer for 21 years.

Investigators are continuing their work to gather information and details regarding the crashes. At this time, no other details are known.
