Man Killed in Long Beach Crash; DUI Suspected
LONG BEACH, CA (April 3, 2020) – On Thursday, charges including murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and other charges were filed against a man in connection with a crash last week in Long Beach that killed Dennis Van Nguyen. The March 23 incident occurred where Pacific Coast Highway and Anaheim Street intersect.
The time was roughly 6:20 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Coroner and Long Beach Police.
Reports say Nguyen had been traveling on Pacific Coast Highway and was northbound in a Kia Spectra. A vehicle—described as a Nissan Altima—which had been traveling at a fast speed on Anaheim Street, went out of the driver’s control when the driver attempted to make a right turn to Pacific Coast Highway. The Nissan crashed into the Kia.
Responders arrived and pronounced Nguyen deceased at the incident site. He was a resident of Westminster, 64 years old.
The driver of the Nissan suffered injuries that were described as significant. Responders transported him to a hospital. He was identified as David Michael Garrison, a resident of Bellflower, 38 years old.
A person who had been traveling in the Nissan as a passenger was identified as a man 28 years old. Reports do not say if the passenger was hurt in the crash.
Garrison is suspected of driving under the influence. He was arrested on Monday.
Reports say that on Thursday, charges were filed against Garrison, including DUI causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense; driving with a blood-alcohol level above .08%; murder; and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
