Big Rig Crashes Off I-5 in Grapevine Area; Diesel Spills

LEBEC, CA (December 6, 2019) – Early in the morning on Monday, a big rig crashed off I-5 in the Grapevine area, and fell down an embankment. The December 2 incident occurred off the southbound side of the freeway, near Smokey Bear Road and to the south of it.

The time was roughly a little after 4:45 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Reports say the big rig—which had been carrying milk—went through the freeway’s guardrail, fell down a slope, and landed on its side. The vehicle spilled diesel fuel in the incident, reportedly about 100 gallons.

Responders arrived to help the driver, who had been injured. The types of injuries the driver suffered, and the current condition are not known. The identity of the driver, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.

HazMat responders also arrived on scene to work on cleaning the spilled diesel fuel. It is estimated that roughly 100 gallons of diesel spilled, and an unkown quantity is believed to have soaked into the soil.

Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened. They are gathering information regarding the incident.
