Large pothole damages 30 cars

A large pothole east of downtown Los Angeles damaged more than 30 vehicles Tuesday morning. Traffic was slowed for nearly six hours as drivers tried to warn other commuters of the hazard.

Many of the cars damaged had damaged tires and wheels. It’s believed that the pothole appeared overnight after a semitrailer crash on the same road Monday. The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether the damage is connected to the semitrailer crash.

The pothole was 3-feet wide and appeared on the transition road between the southbound 4 Freeway and the eastbound 10 Freeway.

“All of a sudden, I just hear, ‘boom boom,'” said Vanice Scott, of Lancaster, in an interview with NBC 4. He was one of several drivers who ended up with a flat tire and pulled to the side of the road. “I almost lost control of the car. Lucky I made it over to the side. It was like a chain reaction. Everybody just kept hitting, pulling over. Hitting, pulling over. Hitting, pulling over.”

A law enforcement officer arrived on the scene around 7 a.m. to help drivers avoid the pothole. Traffic was blocked as workers arrived to repair the damaged road. The road was reopened about 2.pm.

Workers said the damage exposed steel bars that reinforce the road’s concrete. Officials said constant traffic may have worsened the damage and caused the pothole.
