Hit-and-run Driver Involved in Carjacking, Stabbing in Lake Forest; Two Women Seriously Injured
LAKE FOREST, CA (April 17, 2019) – A man suspected of engaging in random criminal acts in Lake Forest seriously injured two women on Tuesday night. The April 16 incidents unfolded close to where Rockfield Boulevard and Mercury Road intersect, close to the Salvation Army store. A man—identified as in his thirties—was reported to have been in a fight there.
The suspect—who has not been identified by name—then entered the apartment of someone he did not know on Ridge Route Drive. The time was roughly 5:00 p.m. Carrie Braun said. Braun is a spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect engaged in an argument with a resident of the building. He left, walked across Rockfield Boulevard, and entered the backyard of a residence located on Danby Drive. In the house were a women and her two daughters who are teenaged. The suspect is alleged to have smashed a window of the house, and grabbed a knife. The mother—identified as in her 40s—ran from the residence to draw the suspect’s attention in an effort to protect her daughters, reports say.
The man ran after the woman who fled on Mullin Road, according to Braun. The suspect grabbed the women after she stumbled, and stabbed her a number of times where she fell.
Good Samaritans who were driving by stopped to help. They had thought the woman was suffering a medical emergency and the man was helping her. As the people approached, they saw the man was stabbing the woman.
The man then began chasing the Good Samaritans, Braun said. The people ran from the suspect who was brandishing a knife. The suspect entered the people’s vehicle and drove off. The suspect is alleged to have weaved through oncoming traffic, drove on a sidewalk, and hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian—identified as a woman in her fifties—who had been on the sidewalk on Muirlands Boulevard, was critically injured. The suspect then collided with a vehicle where Aspan Street and Muirlands Boulevard intersect.
The suspect took off on foot, and entered a mobile home lot in the area. According to Braun, the suspect attempted, unsuccessfully, to enter a residence there. He returned to the street where he made multiple attempts to carjack someone’s vehicle.
A person who was riding by on a bicycle pepper-sprayed the suspect. Deputies came and arrested the man. According to Braun, multiple people from the community helped stop the suspect, which helped deputies. Authorities arrested the man on suspicion of attempted murder, carjacking, and felony hit-and-run.
Respondents took the two women who were injured to a hospital in the area. The victims suffered injuries that were described as critical. It is believed both women will survive. Neither of the victims knew the suspect.
