Two People Killed in Collision Involving Vehicle Fleeing From Police in La Verne
LA VERNE, CA (August 30, 2019) – A collision in La Verne on Thursday night, involving a vehicle that was fleeing from police pursuit, killed Marlet Reyes and one other person, and critically injured three others. The August 29 incident occurred where College Lane and White Avenue intersect.
The time was roughly 8:50 p.m.
Reports say officers with La Verne Police tried to make a traffic stop for a vehicle that ran through a stop sign in the vicinity of Arrow Highway and White Avenue. The vehicle—described as an Acura Integra—would not pull over, for reasons that are not known, Nick Paz said. Paz is the police chief.
The Acura fled from police, went through a traffic light that was red while fleeing, and after only a matter of seconds, it collided with another vehicle—described as a Toyota Corolla. According to police, the Acura appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed.
Responders arrived and took five people to hospitals in the area. Two of the victims had been traveling in the Toyota, and three of the victims had been traveling in the Acura.
While in the hospital, the driver of each vehicle was pronounced deceased. The person who had been driving the Toyota was identified as Reyes. She was 68 years old and La Verne resident.
The person who had been driving the Acura has not been identified in reports, including name, age, gender, and city of residence.
The three people who had been traveling as passengers in the vehicles suffered injuries that were described as critical. Their names, ages, gender, and cities of residence have not been reported.
