Two Injured in Crash on I-8 in La Mesa; Suspected DUI Driver Involved
LA MESA, CA (May 22, 2020) – Early in the morning on Thursday, a crash on I-8 in La Mesa that injured two people involved a driver suspected of DUI. The May 21 incident occurred on the eastbound side of the freeway, near Baltimore Drive and to the east of it.
The time was roughly 12:10 a.m., according to Travis Garrow. Garrow is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say a vehicle–described as a Cadillac CTS–had been heading east at a fast speed. The Cadillac struck the back end of a vehicle–described as a Honda Civic. An Uber driver had been behind the wheel of the Honda, transporting a passenger when the crash occurred.
The Uber Driver lost control of the Honda from the force of the collision, and the Honda overturned. Responders arrived and transported the driver of the Honda to the hospital.
The injuries he suffered were described as major. He was identified as 36 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Responders also transported the Honda’s passenger to a hospital. She suffered injuries that were described as minor, according to Garrow. She was identified only as 22 years old. Her name and city of residence have not been reported.
The driver of the Cadillac was identified as Stephen Briseno, 24 years old and a resident of El Cajon. According to reports, he was not hurt in the crash. Authorities arrested Briseno on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) causing injuries.
Investigators are in the process of gathering information and details regarding the crash.
