Driver Crashes into Tow Truck on State Route 125 in La Mesa; Passenger Dies

LA MESA, CA (October 20, 2020) – Early in the morning on Sunday in La Mesa, a passenger died when the driver crashed into a tow truck. The October 18 incident occurred on State Route 125 on the northbound side, near I-8 and to the south of it.

The time was roughly a little before 12:45 a.m., according to Travis Garrow. Garrow is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

A vehicle–described as a Ford F-150 pickup truck–smashed into a tow truck–described as a Dodge Ram flatbed–that had been on the shoulder of the roadway.

According to Garrow, the operator of the tow truck had been outside the vehicle, and was helping a driver whose vehicle was disabled.

Responders arrived and found that a passenger in the Ford pickup truck died at the incident site. She was identified only as 37 years old. Her name and city of residence have not been reported.

The person who had been driving the Ford pickup was identified as Erik Anderson, a resident of Alpine, 28 years old. Authorities arrested Anderson on suspicion of felony driving under the influence. Reports say Anderson was not injured in the crash.

The operator of the tow truck, and the driver of the disabled vehicle–which has not been described–were were not hurt in the collision, according to reports. The identities of the two people have not been reported.

Investigators are working on collecting information regarding the crash.
