Bicyclist Struck by Driver on University Avenue in La Mesa
LA MESA, CA (October 23, 2019) – On Tuesday afternoon, a bicyclist was struck and injured by a driver in La Mesa who left the scene thinking he hit a curb, reports say. The October 22 incident occurred on University Avenue in the 7000 block.
The time was roughly 4:19 p.m., police said.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a GMC pickup truck—had been traveling on University Avenue. The driver made a turn to the right to Harbinson Avenue, and hit a person who was on a bicycle in a lane designated for bikes.
Authorities said the driver continued to drive, under the impression that he had struck a curb. According to La Mesa Police, the driver was astonished that he had struck a person on a bicycle. Reports say the driver has been cooperating with the investigation.
The driver was identified only as 74 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
The person who had been riding the bicycle suffered injuries that included a broken ankle. The victim was identified only as 21 years old. The person’s name, gender, and city of residence have not been reported.
