Woman Dies After Car Rear-ends Street-sweeping Vehicle in Indio

INDIO, CA (August 14, 2020) – Viviana Lujano suffered fatal injuries after the car she was driving struck the rear end of a street-sweeping vehicle in Indio on Thursday. The August 13 crash occurred where Van Buren Street and Indio Boulevard intersect.

The time was roughly 7:45 a.m., Ben Guitron said. Guitron is a spokesperson for Indio Police.

Lujano had been driving the vehicle–described as a Honda sedan–according to Guitron. The Honda struck the rear-end of the street-sweeper that had been stopped at the intersection for a light that was red.

The force of the collision caused the car to roll over, and come to a stop on its roof. Lujan was thrown from the car.

Responders arrived and transported Lujan to a hospital. The injuries she suffered, which were initially described as critical, were fatal.

According to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office, Lujan died at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, not long after the crash occurred. She was a resident of Oceanside, 27 years old.

Lujan’s husband, and their infant–aged 17 months–were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. According to reports, they were not injured.

The person who had been driving the street-sweeper was also reported to have been uninjured in the crash. The person has not been identified in reports.

Investigators are collecting information regarding the incident.
