Increased Surveillance by California Highway Patrol

The California Highway Patrol is now able to take images of motor vehicles from their airplanes and upload them to detectives on the ground in minutes. This process took hours or days before technology.

In use these day by the CHP are 3-D digital scanners, high tech video systems and devices that can intercept cellphone signals.

A study conducted by the National Insurance Crime Bureau indicated that 29,093 cars were stolen in 2014 in the Bay Area. There were 10,351 thefts in the San Jose-Santa Clara-Sunnyvale area.

Car thefts were down 5.2% from 2013-2014.

About 80% of stolen cars are recovered.

It appears that digital devices are making the difference.

CHP’s surveillance is capable of detecting speeders, persons fleeing the police, finding lost persons, and locating stolen property.

Detectives on the ground have patrol cars equipped with license plate readers. They can receive car owners’ full records in minutes and download them to video systems in the patrol cars.

There are some such as the American Civil Liberties Union who object to the invasion of property associated with the surveillance.

Technology is advancing at a phenomenal rate. There’s more to come.

This technology makes data collection incredibly more efficient, although it is costly.

A single scanner may cost approximately $100,000.00.

This technology reduces human error severely.
