HUNTINGTON PARK, CA (June 25, 2019) – A pickup truck was recorded on video speeding and circling an intersection in Huntington Park, smashing parked cars in the afternoon on Sunday. The June 23 incident occurred where Wilmington Avenue and Gage Avenue intersect, at the boundary of the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Florence/Firestone.
The time was roughly 1:00 p.m.
Reports say investigators discovered that the person driving the pickup truck—identified as Jose Landazure, 75 years old—lost control of the vehicle. The pickup slammed into four vehicles that had been parked. According to reports, no one was inside the parked vehicles when the incident occurred, and no one was hurt.
One of the parked vehicles that was struck was described as an SUV. According to a witness, the pickup’s tires continued to spin. After striking the SUV, reports say, the pickup backed up at a fast speed, traveled over the intersection, and went into the Plaza Americana strip mall parking lot. The pickup stopped against two vehicles that had been parked in the lot. Reports say the pickup then crossed the intersection again and smashed into the SUV.
The types of injuries Landazure suffered in the incident have not been reported, but according to a witness, when his pickup stopped, one of the bystanders punched his face.
Reports say that according to the California Highway Patrol and the Huntington Park Police, alcohol did not play a role in the incident. Investigators are still examining the details and information to understand why the incident occurred.
