Icy Roads in Cajon Pass in Hesperia Lead to Chain Reaction Multi-vehicle Crash
HESPERIA, CA (December 26, 2018) – Icy roads on the 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass on Tuesday morning caused slick surfaces leading to a chain-reaction, multi-vehicle crash. The December 25 accident occurred in the freeway’s northbound lanes, where ice and snow made driving difficult.
The time was roughly 6:35 a.m.
Reports say that California Highway Patrol received calls that a vehicle had spun out in the Hesperia area, and was blocking all of the freeway’s lanes to the south of Oak Hill Road.
A number of crashes occurred a short while later. According to some reports, 20 or more vehicles were involved in collisions. A report from CHP says that a vehicle—described as a Toyota 4Runner—slid off the road and landed in the lot of Desert Valley Towing Yard, located on Mariposa Road.
Authorities closed the freeway at Highway 138 at roughly 7:50 a.m. Traffic backed up on the freeway. Reports say that some drivers executed U-turns to exit the freeway, driving in the wrong direction to get off the road.
No details have yet been reported on the identities of people involved in the collisions, and if anyone was hurt. Investigators are examining the information.
