Head-on Collision in La Mesa Kills One Person

LA MESA, CA (August 15, 2018) – One person died in a head-on crash Tuesday morning in La Mesa, police reported. The accident occurred on Riviera Drive, a little bit south of Spring Street.
Lieutenant Vince Brown with the La Mesa Police Department said the accident scene was located on a portion of the elevated road that overlooks state Route 94.
The time was roughly 7:45 a.m.
According to reports, the person who died was the driver of a 1998 Toyota Camry. The Camry was heading west on Riviera Drive, and then drove into oncoming traffic. The Camry then crashed a 2000 Jeep Cherokee head on, according to Lt. Brian Stoney.
Stoney said that when officers arrived at the site of the crash, they saw that the driver in each vehicle was trapped because of the major damage caused by the crash.
Responders from the fire department had to extricate each driver before the victims could be taken to hospitals in the area.
The person who had been driving the Camry died from his injuries. He was identified as a 40 year old. The person who was driving the Jeep was identified as a woman 33 years old. According to police, she suffered minor injuries.
Stoney indicated that evidence suggested that the driver may have been distracted prior to the accident. He said that investigators do not think that alcohol played a role.
People who witnessed the accident said to investigators that neither the Camry nor the Jeep seemed to be speeding prior to the collision. Police ask that anyone who has information regarding the accident call the La Mesa Police Department. The number to call is 619-667-1400.
