Hazardous Week for People on the Street in San Jose

This has been a hazardous week for people who were walking or bicycling in San Jose. On Wednesday, November 9, 2011, a car hit a 67-year-old pedestrian who was crossing in the crosswalk on Jackson Avenue and Alexanian Drive, according to police as reported in the Silicon Valley Mercury News. Responders took the woman to the Regional Medical Center, where she died a short while later. The accident marks yet another tragic crash in only five days that a pedestrian or bicyclist was struck by a car.
The crash that killed the woman occurred at 6:35 p.m. Only ten minutes later, according the Mercury News, another pedestrian—a 54-year-old man—was hit by a car as he walked across Tully Road. His injuries are life threatening.
Seeming unreal if it weren’t true, only five minutes after the accident that involved the 54-year-old man, a 44-year-old man on a bicycle was hit by a different car also on Tully Road, and only a few blocks from the accident that injured the other man. Police stated in the news story that both men may not survive their injuries.
These accidents occurred only a few days after 58-year-old Jingang Tan was hit and killed by an SUV as he rode his bicycle across a street in west San Jose around 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
Only a couple of days earlier, 20-year-old Jessenia Camacho-Torres was hit by two cars as she crossed a street in south San Jose Saturday night. She also died.
Police interviewed the drivers involved in all the crashes, but did not make any arrests. They are investigating the collisions to try to determine the causes.
Police are warning drivers that with the time change back to standard time, roads are harder to see in the dark, which is happening earlier now during the commute. They are also asking pedestrians and cyclists to make themselves visible by wearing and using reflective clothing and equipment, and carrying a flashlight. In only three workdays since the change back to standard time, there have already been four serious collisions.
Fourteen people who were cycling or walking have died this year in San Jose.
