Fatal Crash in Gardena Involving Tesla Investigated by NHTSA
GARDENA, CA (January 2, 2020) – A crash that killed two people in Gardena on Tuesday, in which a Tesla automobile was involved, is being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The December 29 incident occurred near the 91 Freeway.
Reports say that a Tesla automobile had been traveling on the 91 Freeway, and when it left the freeway, it was traveling at a fast speed. Reports say the Tesla went through a light that was red, and collided with another vehicle—described as a Honda Civic—in an intersection.
Two people who had been in the Honda—identified as a woman and a man—died at the incident site. Their identities, including name, age, and city of residence, have not been reported.
Responders transported two people who had been traveling in the Tesla to a hospital. The injuries they suffered were described as not life threatening. The two people in the Tesla were identified only as a woman and a man.
Investigators with the Los Angeles Police are examining details, information, and evidence in the crash to find out why it happened.
Investigators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are also examining the incident. It is not known if the Autopilot system of the Tesla was on when the crash occurred. According to the federal agency, a team is examining crash scene details and the Tesla.
