Boy Killed in Multiple-vehicle Collision on 405 Freeway in Fountain Valley
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA (April 1, 2019) – A boy was killed in a collision involving five vehicles on the 405 Freeway in Fountain Valley on Saturday night. The March 30 accident occurred in the freeway’s northbound lanes, close to Euclid Street.
The time was roughly a bit before 11:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say that a vehicle—described as a pickup truck—crashed into the rear of a minivan in the HOV lane. The minivan was disabled, according to reports, prior to the crash. It is not known from reports why the minivan was disabled prior to being hit by the pickup.
Five people—members of one family—had been in the minivan at the time of the collision. According to the California Highway Patrol, the people inside the Honda Odyssey suffered injuries that ranged from moderate to major. One victim—identified as a boy—died, according to April Carter. Carter is a sergeant. The boy’s identity, including his name, age, and city of residence, has not been reported. The identities of the other family members have not been reported. The driver of the minivan was identified as a resident of San Marcos. The person driving the pickup truck has not been identified.
A second collision occurred after the first crash, involving a silver Toyota Tacoma that struck the back of a black Tacoma. According to the California Highway Patrol, four people suffered minor injuries in that crash. Reports say that investigators think the second Tacoma had been in the freeway’s HOV lane when the collision occurred. The identities of the people in the second collision have not been reported. The person who had been driving the silver Tacoma was described as a resident of Los Angeles.
The person who had been driving the black Tacoma suffered injuries that were described as major. He was identified as 24 years old and a resident of Tustin. According to California Highway Patrol, he was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
Reports say two other vehicles were involved in the crash, but the other vehicles have not been described. The identities of the people in the other vehicles have not been reported. At this time, it is not clear from reports what circumstances led to each collision. Investigators are examining the details.
