Escondido, CA (April 26, 2023) – An off-duty police officer from Escondido was hit by a car on the 15 Freeway on Sunday morning, April 23. According to the Escondido Police Department, the officer was on his way to work when the incident occurred.
Officer Hit by Car on 15 Freeway near Deer Springs Road
At around 10:27 a.m., the California Highway Patrol received a report of a hit-and-run near Deer Springs Road. Traffic on the freeway had slowed down due to a stalled vehicle on the shoulder. The officer, who was accompanied by his wife and children, got out of his vehicle to assist with directing traffic.
A red Ford Focus was attempting to bypass the slow traffic by driving on the shoulder when it collided with the officer, knocking him onto the hood. Fortunately, the officer suffered only minor injuries and was able to contact the EPD dispatch to provide them with the license plate number of the car that hit him.
An Investigation is Currently Underway in Escondido
Police officers arrived at the scene and took the driver of the Focus into custody. There were no other injuries reported, and an investigation is currently underway.
The incident serves as a reminder for drivers to always be aware of their surroundings and to watch out for pedestrians on the road. By following traffic rules and refraining from driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, drivers can help prevent dangerous road accidents.
What is the Best Way to Avoid Hitting Someone Pulled Over On The Side of the I-15 Freeway?
The best way to avoid hitting someone pulled over on the side of the 15 freeway, in Escondido, is to be vigilant, alert, and observant when driving. Here are some specific steps you can take:
- Be aware of your surroundings: Keep your eyes on the road and be alert to any potential hazards, including vehicles that may be pulled over on the side of the road.
- Slow down: Reduce your speed when you see a vehicle pulled over on the side of the freeway. This will give you more time to react if the driver or passengers suddenly step out of their vehicle.
- Move over: If possible, move over to the adjacent lane to give the pulled-over vehicle more space. This is especially important if emergency vehicles are present or if the pulled-over vehicle is in a dangerous location.
- Signal your intentions: Use your turn signal to indicate your intention to change lanes or slow down.
- Stay focused: Avoid distractions such as using your phone, eating or drinking, or engaging in any activity that takes your attention away from the road.
By following these steps, you can help ensure your safety and the safety of off duty police officers trying to help direct traffic on the 15 freeway.
