Two School Buses and U-Haul Truck Collide on SR-76 Near Escondido, Causing Injuries
ESCONDIDO, CA (July 30, 2019) – A U-Haul Truck and two school buses collided Thursday afternoon on state Route 76 near Escondido, causing injuries. The August 1 incident occurred in the area of Pauma Valley, close to Valley Center Road and in the highway’s westbound lane.
The time was roughly a bit after 12:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say a church group had been traveling in the school buses on their way to Palomar. One of the buses struck a U-Haul truck as it went around a roundabout. The impact sent the U-Haul into the other bus, which was in front of it.
According to reports, one of the buses contained 31 students and four counselors, but it is not clear if it was the bus in the front of the chain-reaction collision, or the bus to the rear, behind the U-Haul.
Reports also say that responders transported one victim—identified as one of the drivers—to a hospital. It is not clear, however, which vehicle the victim had been driving. The identity of the victim—including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence—has not been reported.
Eight people had been injured in the incident, with minor to moderate injuries reported. None of the victims have been identified. According to Cal Fire, 12 children received evaluations and had been cleared regarding concerns related to the heat.
Nothing is known from reports regarding the person driving the U-Haul truck, and whether that person had been injured. It is not known if anyone else had been traveling in the U-Haul.
Investigators are continuing their information-gathering work.
