Hit-and-run Collision Kills Woman on SR-78 in Escondido
ESCONDIDO, CA (April 4, 2019) – A woman was killed in a hit-and-run collision early in the morning on Wednesday on state Route 78 in Escondido. The April 3 accident occurred in the westbound lanes of the highway, close to Rock Springs Road.
The time was roughly a bit before 6:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say a caller contacted 911 after seeing a person on the highway’s shoulder on the right side. Respondents arrived and pronounced the victim deceased at the accident site. The victim was identified as a woman 26 years old and a resident of Escondido. Her name has not been reported.
According to Mark Latulippe, who is a public affairs officer with the California Highway Patrol, investigators are examining the details regarding the incident to find out how the woman came to be on the freeway, and why the accident happened.
Latulippe also said that investigators found debris from a automobile at the site where the woman was struck. They believe the vehicle involved in the fatal incident was a Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, green in color, and year 2017 or 2018.
