Deputy Suffers Injuries When Car Crashes into Her Patrol Vehicle in Escondido

ESCONDIDIO, CA (July 9, 2019) – A deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff was hurt Sunday night when a car smashed into her patrol vehicle in Escondido. The July 7 incident occurred during a pursuit at high speeds, according to authorities.

The incident unfolded at roughly 10:44 p.m.

According to Hank Lebitski, who is a sergeant, a vehicle—described as a Nissan Pathfinder—had been heading traveling north on Center City Parkway. It an area close to Jesmond Dene Road, the Nissan was seen by Deputy S. Hurd and it did not have lights on.

Deputy Hurd tried to pull the Nissan over for a traffic stop in the area of Champagne Boulevard, close to where Mountain Meadow Road is located. Reports say the person who was driving the Nissan stopped for a little while, and then left, heading northbound on Champagne Boulevard. The Nissan was reported to have been traveling at speeds towards 90 miles per hour, according to Lebitski.

The suspect vehicle then traveled on Gopher Canyon Road, and got on I-5 heading south. The driver of the Nissan made a U-turn on the freeway, heading north on the freeway’s southbound side. The Nissan is reported to have struck the passenger door in the rear of the patrol vehicle.

Responders transported Hurd to Palomar Hospital. The injuries she suffered were described as minor.

According to reports, authorities found the Nissan at Lawrence Welk Resort, which is located on Lawrence Welk Drive in the 8800 block. Authorities apprehended a suspect, but according to Lebitski, the driver was not found. The identity of the suspect, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.

A description of the suspect driver has not been reported. Investigators are continuing their work on the facts of the incident.
