Man Drives Van into Group of People on Sidewalk on South Coast Highway in Encinitas
ENCINITAS, CA (March 2, 2020) – A man who drove a van into a group of people who were standing on a sidewalk in Encinitas was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Sunday. The March 1 incident occurred on South Coast Highway 101 in the 500 block, outside of The Saloon Bar.
The time was roughly 1:19 a.m., Agustin Rosas said. Rosas is a sergeant with the San Diego County Sheriff.
Reports say that according to those who witnessed the incident, the vehicle—described as a U-Haul van—traveled on the sidewalk toward a group of people. People scattered, and the van drove into the bar, destroying the door and breaking glass, witnesses said.
According to reports, deputies were told by witnesses that the driver had been inside the bar prior to the incident and was asked to leave the premises due to his intoxication. The man entered his van and allegedly went onto the sidewalk and attempted to strike people, according to Rosas.
Responders arrived and transported three victims who had been struck by the van to hospitals. The three victims suffered injuries that were described as serious. The identities of the people have not been reported.
Two other people suffered injuries that were described as minor when they kept the driver from leaving the incident site until authorities came on scene. The identities of the two people have not been reported.
Authorities arrested the suspect driver, who was identified as Christian Dwight Davis, 28 years old. He faces charges that include three counts of attempted first degree murder, and one charge of attempted escape with force, according to reports.
