An elderly married couple died in a one-car crash in Desert Center on Tuesday. The married couple, who both suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, were reported missing the day before, according to authorities.
Jose and Consuelo Bracero, 73 and 75 respectively, were last seen in Carson leaving their home around 2:30 p.m. Monday. They were reported missing a short time later, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The 1999 Ford Escort that was being driven by Jose Bracero veered off Interstate 10 and overturned around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday east of the Coachella Valley, said officials.
Consuelo Bracero was pronounced dead at the scene while Jose Bracero was transported to JFK Memorial Hospital by helicopter where he later died.
Neither alcohol nor drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash according to the California, High way patrol. Neither victim were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.
It is not clear why they left or where they were heading, or why they were able to leave their home while suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
