Driver Smashes Car into El Cajon Budget Inn; Police Suspect Attempted Murder
EL CAJON, CA (January 11, 2019) – A vehicle smashed into the lobby of Budget Inn in El Cajon late Thursday afternoon. Police arrested the driver on suspicion of attempted murder.
The January 10 incident occurred on East Main Street in the 1500 block, near Interstate 8 and to the north of it.
The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m.
According to Jason Taub, who is a lieutenant with the El Cajon Police, the person who is suspected of murder and a clerk working at the motel had an argument. Taub said that the suspect had come out of his room, talked to the clerk, and a conversation ensued. The suspect is reported to have threatened to hurt the clerk.
Some time later, at roughly 8:00 p.m., the suspect—identified as a man 62 years old—smashed his vehicle into the motel, through a wall, with the vehicle ending up inside the office where the clerk was located. Taub said the clerk had been seated behind a desk at the time of the crash.
Reports say respondents transported the clerk—who suffered injuries that were described as moderate—to a hospital. The name, age, gender, and city of residence of the clerk have not yet been reported. The types of injuries the clerk suffered are not known at this time, nor the person’s current condition.
Taub said the driver was not injured in the crash. Police suspect the man was driving under the influence of alcohol, reports say.
Police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, attempted homicide, and domestic violence. The name and city of residence of the suspect have not yet been reported.
Investigators are examining the details, information, and evidence to find out why the incident happened. No other details are available at this time.
