Crash on East Washington Avenue in El Cajon Kills Driver, Injures Bystander, Burns 4 Vehicles
EL CAJON, CA (May 7, 2020) – On Tuesday afternoon, a crash in El Cajon killed a driver, injured a person working in the area, and burned four vehicles. The May 5 incident occurred on East Washington Avenue in the 1100 block.
The time was a little before 1:30 p.m., police said.
Reports say a vehicle–described as Lexus RX350–had been going at a fast speed and veered off the road. According to reports, a person at work at a construction site nearby, who had been sitting in a parked vehicle, witnessed the SUV coming toward him.
According to the witness, the SUV appeared to be out of the driver’s control. He had moments to leap from the pickup truck and warn the other people who were working at the site, according to Jason Taub. Taub is a police lieutenant.
The Lexus SUV crashed, and erupted in flames. Responders arrived and saw that four vehicles in total were burning.
Responders discovered that the person who had been driving the Lexus SUV died at the incident site. The identity of the person, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.
One of the people who had been working at the job site suffered injuries that were described as minor when a toolbox, which had gone airborne, struck the victim.
Responders transported the victim to the hospital. The identity of the person has not been reported.
Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened. The owners of the four vehicles that were burned have not been identified.
