The aftermath which follows a car accident is often chaotic and hectic. Another topic area which proves to be equally—if not more—tricky is politics. One driver has managed to mix the two tense and touchy topics after she was involved in a car accident while running for a government position.

A state Legislature candidate, Christina Ayala has become involved in a car accident a couple months ago. Instead of stopping to help the victims she injured, the 29-year old female fled the scene. Maybe Ayala didn’t want her reputation compromised, but she is currently facing more backlashes because of the actions she took.

The initial accident happened on Aug. 15. Ayala was driving her 2007 Nissan Sentra with a 13-year old and a 7-year old as passengers. While in the intersection of North and Briarwood avenues in Northern California, the Democratic candidate for the 128th District state representative seat collided with a 2002 Honda Accord. The Honda was being driven by a female 26-year old driver, a resident of Bridgeport. Right after the crash, Ayala took off without helping the Honda driver.

Luckily, there were no serious personal injuries from the car accident. However, Ayala is still being charged with failure to obey traffic signals and evading responsibility.

Even though she fled the scene, the Democratic candidate was flagged down at the corner of Laurel Place and Brooklawn Avenue. The person who flagged her down was a good Samaritan who had witnessed the car crash scene. This person had chased down Ayala for about six blocks before she stopped.

On Tuesday, October 16, Ayala pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. Her case is set for Nov. 16 at the Bridgeport Superior Court. The government candidate issued a statement days after the incident expressing that she was sorry and panicked at the scene of the collision. She said that she regretted her misjudgment.

The mother of the Honda driver said that she is unhappy that Ayala is allowed to remain in the race even after the actions she took after the accident. Ayala is facing a Republican candidate, Manuel Bataguas, in the Nov. 6 election.
