Vehicle Crashes into House in Covina; Injured Passenger Abandoned

COVINA, CA (October 12, 2020) – On Saturday night, a vehicle crashed into a house in Covina, and the driver abandoned an injured passenger and fled. The October 10 incident occurred in the vicinity of Hollenbeck Avenue and Workman Avenue.

The time was roughly 9:20 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers had spotted a vehicle–described as a Tesla Model 3–going at a fast speed on the 10 Freeway westbound in the area of Grand Avenue. Officers attempted to pull the driver over, reports say, and pursued the speeding car, according to Camrin Servio. Servio is a sergeant with CHP.

Officers ceased chasing the Tesla due to the high speed–reported as roughly 90 miles per hour–the vehicle had been traveling. The Tesla exited the freeway at Azusa Avenue, still traveling at speed, reports say.

Not long after the Tesla exited the freeway, officers discovered the Tesla had smashed into a house near the Hollenbeck Avenue and Workman Avenue intersection.

Officers and responders found a person who was described as a passenger in the Tesla. The person suffered injuries that were described as moderate. Responders transported her to a hospital. Her identity has not been reported.

Residents of the home are reported to have recounted that the Tesla struck a utility pole, and then crashed into two vehicles that were parked in the home’s driveway. The Tesla hit a third vehicle, which had been inside the garage at the time of the incident.

The owners of the home have not been identified in reports.

The Tesla could not be towed from the crash scene, reports say, because crews were concerned the garage’s structure had been compromised, and the roof would fall.

Investigators are searching for the driver, who has not been described.
