Woman Walking Her Dog is Killed on Irvine Ave. in Costa Mesa
COSTA MESA, CA (September 8, 2020) – Early in the morning on Sunday, a woman who was walking her dog in Costa Mesa was struck and killed by a suspected hit-and-run driver. The September 6 incident occurred where Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue intersect.
The time was 6:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim had been going across the road with her dog when a vehicle–described as a Hyundai sedan–went through a light that was red and struck the two walkers, according to Florentino Olivera. Olivera is a spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol.
The person driving the vehicle did not stop to help the victims, but fled the incident site.
Responders arrived and found the two victims down on the road within a crosswalk. The woman died at the scene of the crash, and her dog died with her.
The woman was identified only as a resident of Newport Beach. Her name and age have not been reported. Her dog’s name has also not been reported.
Some hours after the crash, the suspected hit-and-run driver was taken into custody by Riverside Police, who notified the California Highway Patrol.
The suspected hit-and-run driver was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of DUI, and of hit-and-run with fatalities. The suspect driver was identified as Ali Zohair Fakhreddine, a resident of Riverside, 31 years old.
Investigators are continuing their work of gathering information and details regarding the incident.
