Airplane Tire Explodes, Killing Contractor at John Wayne Airport in Costa Mesa
COSTA MESA, CA (February 20, 2019) – An airplane tire exploded and killed a contractor late at night on Tuesday at John Wayne Airport in Costa Mesa. The February 19 accident occurred near terminal 3 in an airline workshop.
The time was roughly 11:20 p.m., according to Deanne Thompson. Thompson is a spokesperson for the airport.
Reports say that two contractors had been working on a tire that was 4 feet tall. The tire was not on an airplane while the contractors were working. While they were working on it, the tire ruptured before exploding.
Thompson said that one of the contractors was injured from the explosion’s impact. Respondents pronounced the victim deceased at the accident scene. The victim’s identity, including name, age, gender, and city of residence has not yet been reported.
The second person working was not hurt when the tire exploded, according to reports.
Investigators are examining the details to understand what led to the accident.
