Collision on I-5 in San Diego County Involving Wrong-way driver Kills Two People
RAINBOW, SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA (October 29, 2018) – A collision involving a wrong-way driver in San Diego County, close to the town of Rainbow, killed two people Friday night.
The October 26 crash occurred on Interstate 15, according to the California Highway Patrol. The time was a little after 11:00 p.m.
According to reports, a driver—who may have been driving under the influence—had been traveling in the wrong direction on the interstate when his vehicle collided with another vehicle. The collision killed both drivers.
The wrong-way vehicle was described as a Hyundai, white in color. It accessed I-15 from Deer Spring Road, heading north in the lanes that travel south. Reports say that CHP began a traffic break close to state Route 76 to bring the wrong-way driver to a stop.
The wrong-way driver passed the traffic break, failed to stop, and proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, going very fast. Reports say another unit from the CHP was sent out, but the Hyundai had collided with another vehicle.
The victim’s car—described as a Honda Civic—had been heading the right way on I-15 southbound, close to Rainbow Valley Boulevard at the time of the crash.
Responders pronounced the driver of the Honda deceased at the accident scene. They took the Hyundai’s driver to Palomar Medical Center. He died later.
Mark Latulippe, who is an officer with the California Highway Patrol, said the driver going the wrong way was identified as a man, 23 years old, from Lake Elsinore. The driver in the car he struck was identified as a woman, 20 years old, from Murrieta.
Investigators are continuing their exploration of the details.
