Witness to Hit-and-run Crash in Chula Vista is Shot

CHULA VISTA, CA (January 7, 2021) – A person who witnessed a hit-and-run crash in Chula Vista on Tuesday afternoon was shot in the head. The January 5 incident occurred where Palomar Street and Fifth Avenue intersect.

The time was roughly 4:00 p.m., Chula Vista Police said.

The victim who witnessed the crash–which has not been described–had been in a vehicle that was following the suspected hit-and-run driver, attempting to see the license plate number. Gunshot occurred, and the witness was shot, according to reports.

Responders arrived and transported the victim to the hospital. He was reported to have suffered a wound to his head from a bullet, according to Miriam Foxx. Foxx is a lieutenant with the police.

The injury was described as not life threatening. His current condition is not known.

The witness was identified only as 25 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.

According to Foxx, the Chula Vista Police Department deployed a drone, and an officer found the car of the suspected hit-and-run driver. The officer is reported to have seen the person who is alleged to have fired the gun exit the suspect driver’s vehicle while carrying a gun.

The alleged shooter is reported to have been a passenger in the suspected hit-and-run driver’s car. The alleged shooter was described as a boy, 17 years old. His name has not been reported as he is a minor.

Authorities arrested the person suspected of shooting. He was booked on suspicion of felony assault with a firearm.

Authorities issued a citation to the driver suspected of hit-and-run. The person’s identity as not been reported.

Investigators are continuing work on the incident.
