China Mine Accident Kills 21 Workers

Posted on March 13, 2013 | Written By: iadminlaw

A mine accident has killed 21 miners in China. Four miners are still missing. The accident occurred in the southern province of Guizhou.

English: Coal miner in Xingtai, China

A rescue effort has begun for the missing workers. According to the state media, 58 miners have safely escaped the scene of the mine accident. The State Administration of Work Safety is conducting the search along with other officials and emergency workers.

China’s coal industry has been troubled for awhile now.  The country’s mines have been found to be among the deadliest in the world. There is talk of lax regulation, corruption, and inefficient practices. Labor groups claim that although it has been reported that 1,973 people died in coal mining accidents in China in 2011, the decrease could actually be due to under-reporting of accidents. Mine bosses do not want to face the economic issues that would stem from the backlash against a mine accident. China is also the world’s biggest consumer of coal. They have growing energy needs that rely mostly on fossil fuels. It has been a matter of contention with other developing and developed countries because the effects of fossil fuels have been shown to worsen global warming and speed up the entire process.

The accident involved a coal and gas outburst. It happened around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Machang Coal Mine. There were 83 workers underground during the accident. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
