Jeff Dye Killed While Helping People on 5 Freeway Near Castaic; Nine Injured
CASTAIC, CA (February 4, 2019) – Jeff Dye was killed in the morning on Saturday when a vehicle struck him as he was helping someone who had been in an earlier collision on I-5 in the area of Castaic. The February 2 accident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway.
The time was roughly 7:15 a.m.
Reports say that Dye—who was a volunteer team member of Ventura County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue and had been traveling to a training exercise—had stopped to help someone who had been involved in a crash. A vehicle—described as a Nissan Murano—had oveturned in the divider in the center of the freeway, near Vista Del Lago and a bit to the south. According to the California Highway Patrol, the sole person traveling in the Murano was Rito Ruiz, 63 years old and a resident of Canoga Park.
Respondents from the search and rescue team and from the Los Angeles County Fire Department were helping Ruiz when a vehicle—described as a Ford Expedition—that had been traveling northbound struck the crew from Search and Rescue and the Fire Department truck.
The California Highway Patrol said Ruiz suffered injuries that were described as major. Respondents took Ruiz to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, located in Santa Clarita.
Three people who were members of the Search and Rescue team suffered injuries and were taken to a hospital. The condition of two of the victims was described as critical. One victim was treated and discharged. A firefigher with Los Angeles County was also reported to have suffered injuries, and was taken to the hospital. Reports say that nine people suffered injuries and were transported to hospitals.
The identities of the people who were injured have not been reported. The driver of the Ford Expedition was identified as Oscar Rodriguez, 42 years old and a resident of Los Angeles.
Investigators are continuing to examine the details and information regarding the accident.
