Man Identified as Marine Killed on I-5 in Carlsbad by Wrong-way Driver
CARLSBAD, CA (January 16, 2020) – Matthew Ryan Adams was identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as the Marine who was killed on I-5 in Carlsbad by a wrong-way driver. The January 14 incident occurred in the northbound lanes.
The incident began near Monterey Drive, when officers attempted to stop a truck driver for a minor traffic violation. The truck driver initially complied by pulling over, reports say, but as an officer walked toward the truck, the driver fled. Officers pursued the truck driver as he traveled through Oceanside.
The truck driver entered I-5 traveling the wrong way, going south in the lanes that head north. The truck driver struck the vehicle Adams was driving—described as a Pontiac sedan—head on.
Adams was killed in the incident. He was a Marine on active duty, stationed in the area at Camp Pendleton.
The truck driver died in the collision. He was identified as Christian Zurita, 42 years old.
Investigators are continuing their work on the incident.
