Last Friday the combination of a vicious car crash that frightened passengers into thinking gunshots were fired, and the false report of a man with a weapon caused thousands of flight delays at Los Angeles International Airport.
At 7:30 p.m., police received a phone call about possible shots fired near the airport. Upon further investigation, police soon discovered the source of the sound was the result of a car crash outside between Terminals 4 and 5. After hearing the crash, airport travelers began evacuating on their own.
Many people were sensitive to what occurred on Nov. 1, when Paul Anthony Ciancia opened fire in Terminal 3, killing a TSA officer and wounding four others. The sound of the car crash caused slight panic in passengers.
After the car crash, at about 8:20 p.m., crowds were seen gathered outside the airport as police evacuated Terminals 4 and 5 after receiving an anonymous phone call about a man with a gun at gate 45.
Police searched the terminals and found no weapon. Passengers were screened by security before being allowed to reenter the terminals.
About 4,600 passengers were affected by the incidents. Delta and American airlines reported 60 delayed flights.
At this time, no information was available regarding the investigation into the anonymous phone call.
