Bakersfield, CA (April21st, 2023) – Hit-and-run crash on Highway 184 Thursday night claimed the life of a 35-year-old pedestrian. The Kern County Fire Department pronounced the victim dead at the scene, located on the northbound right shoulder of Highway 184, just north of Blackburn Street.
The CHP Is Urging Anyone With Any Information To Come Forward
The California Highway Patrol‘s preliminary investigation revealed that a white Nissan sedan, possibly a Sentra or Altima model, hit the pedestrian, who was walking westbound across the northbound lane of Highway 184. The car involved in the incident fled the scene. Witnesses at the site reported that the driver did not see the pedestrian crossing the roadway and the vehicle did not slow down or try to avoid the collision.
A witness at the scene described the vehicle as a white Nissan sedan that was last seen heading northbound on 184 Highway. The pedestrian was propelled forward onto the northbound dirt shoulder. The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and they are urging anyone with information about the driver or the vehicle involved to contact them immediately.
Authorities do not know if impairment played a role, but if anyone has seen this crash and can help the CHP, please call 661-396-6600.
What is the Best Way To Cross a Highway in The Dark?
Crossing a highway in the dark can be dangerous and should be avoided whenever possible. However, if it’s absolutely necessary to cross, there are several steps you can take to increase your safety:
- Use a designated pedestrian crossing, if available. Look for a pedestrian bridge or an underpass to cross the highway safely.
- Look for well-lit areas. If you must cross the highway at night, try to find a well-lit area with good visibility. Avoid crossing in areas with poor lighting or obscured sightlines.
- Wear reflective clothing. Make sure you wear clothing that’s visible to drivers, especially if you’re crossing the highway in the dark. Wearing reflective clothing or accessories can help drivers see you from a distance.
- Use a flashlight. If possible, carry a flashlight with you to increase your visibility and help drivers see you more clearly.
- Check for traffic. Always look both ways before crossing the highway, even if you’re using a designated pedestrian crossing. Listen for the sound of approaching vehicles and make sure you have enough time to safely cross the highway.
- If you see a car approaching, get out of the way of it. Pay attention. Don’t assume it will see you.
