Maria Guadalupe Garcia Killed in Bakersfield Crash on Highway 58 Interchange
BAKERSFIELD, CA (November 30, 2018) – Maria Guadalupe Garcia was killed in the afternoon on Wednesday on the shoulder of Highway 58 in Bakersfield. She had been exchanging information with another driver after an accident she was involved in when a vehicle hit her and the other person.
The November 28 accident occurred on the right shoulder of the road that transitions from Highway 58 westbound to Highway 99 northbound. The time was roughly 1:11 p.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office, Garcia had been exchanging information with the other driver involved in the earlier accident when a pickup truck hit the both of them.
Authorities said that Garcia died at the accident scene. She was 72 years old, and a resident of Bakersfield.
Respondents transported the other victim, who had suffered injuries that were described as major, to Kern Medical Center.
The CHP said the pickup truck made a lane change that was not safe, struck a vehicle, and swerved toward the people on the shoulder. The pickup hit Garcia and the other driver, and one of the vehicles on the shoulder.
The identity of the other driver who had been standing on the road’s shoulder has not been reported, nor the types of injuries suffered by that person.
The identity of the pickup driver has also not yet been reported.
Investigators are examining the details.
