Collision Injures Two Children and Three Adults on Christmas Day in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, CA (December 27, 2018) – Two children and three adults suffered injuries in a crash in Bakersfield early in the morning on Christmas. The December 25 accident occurred on Sterling Road in East Bakersfield, at Niles Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The time was roughly 2:10 a.m.
Reports say that a Saturn Aura had been traveling north on Sterling Road and it did not stop for a red light at the intersection with Niles Street. The Saturn collided with a Honda Pilot that had been heading west on Niles Street.
The Honda rolled over from the force of the impact of the crash. It came to a stop in a gas station’s parking lot at the intersection’s northwest corner. The Saturn came to a stop in that parking lot also after striking a number of sign posts.
A person who had been driving, and three passengers, suffered injuries in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver—identified as a 40 year old—and a passenger—identified as a man 64 years old—suffered injuries that were described as minor. Respondents transported them to a hospital.
Two children who had been traveling as passengers had not been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The children—11 years old and 16 years old—suffered injuries that were major. Their injuries included broken clavicles and injuries to their heads, reports say. Respondents took them to Valley Children’s. A fifth person who had been traveling as a passenger—identified as a child 10 years old—had not been injured. The names of the people involved in the accident, and their city of residence have not yet been reported.
According to the CHP, the Saturn Aura left the accident scene. The person driving the Saturn—identified as Mark Gallegos, 19 years old—went to Kern Medical Center to receive treatment for injuries that were described as moderate. He was arrested at the hospital for driving under the influence and hit-and-run.
