Semi Truck Burns on Highway 101, Ignites Brushfire Near Atascadero

ATASCADERO, CA (August 20, 2019) – On Monday afternoon, a semi truck began to burn on the side of Highway 101, which then ignited a brushfire near Atascadero. The August 19 incident occurred on the road’s southbound side, close to the offramp for Santa Barbara Road.

The time was roughly 1:49 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Reports say a semi truck, which had been carrying a load of rocks weighing 79,000 pounds, had been traveling south on the highway. The driver moved to the shoulder on the righthand side of the road when a tire became flat.

According to reports, the driver exited the truck, and when he went to inspect the tire, he saw that it was smoking. Before he could return from grabbing the fire extinguisher, fire had ignited in the brush bordering the road.

Responders arrived and extinguished the fire. According to CAL FIRE, ¾ of an acre burned. The driver was not injured in the incident. The identity of the driver, including his name, age, and city of residence, has not been reported.

The fire on Monday occurred relatively near the location of a brush fire that happened on Friday, in which 45 acres burned. In that incident, the fire began when a vehicle—described as a pickup truck—had a malfunction, spun out, and struck the divider in the center of the road.
