Hit-and-run Driver Flees on Foot from Crash on Highway 101 in Atascadero
ATASCADERO, CA (April 4, 2019) – A hit-and-run driver fled on foot after colliding with another vehicle on Highway 101 in Atascadero in the morning on Wednesday. The March 3 accident occurred on the northbound side of the highway, near Traffic Way and to the south of it.
The time was a bit after 9:00 a.m.
A Toyota Tacoma had been traveling to exit the highway at Traffic Way, and another vehicle, described as a Ford F-150 made a lane change that was unsafe, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Ford hit the Toyota on the side. The Toyota went out of the driver’s control, veered off the road, traveled through a fence, and hit a tree. The Toyota finally stopped in a parking lot at Denny’s, reports say.
The person driving the Toyota—identified as a man 48 years old and a resident of Atascadero—suffered injuries that were described as moderate. Respondents transported him to a hospital. His name has not been reported. The types of injuries he suffered are not known, nor his current condition.
Reports say that people who witnessed the incident saw the person who had been driving the Ford pull over and stop on the offramp for Traffic Way. The driver removed papers from the glove compartment of the truck, and fled on foot, heading in the direction of El Camino Real.
According to investigators, the person who fled left his identification, a laptop, other things, and mail, which included his name, address, and birth date. The California Highway Patrol said they are searching for Richard Lawrence Gonzalez, 39 years old and a resident of Creston as the person suspected in the hit-and-run collision.
