Details on Fatal Crash in Bakersfield

August 24th ─ 4 people who were killed in a crash in northwestern Bakersfield Tuesday evening have been identified. Kern County Coroner’s Office released the identity of all 4 victims in Tuesdays fatal crash, 27-year old Mark Hoyt and his girlfriend 24-year old Lacey Lynn McQuilliams both residents of Bakersfield. The other 2 victims were identified as 23-years old Deziaray Zepeda and 26-years old Stephen Taylor Walker both were also residents of Bakersfield. The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. when California Highway Patrol deputies responded to call of a collision between a semi-trailer truck and a Toyota Corolla on Rosedale Highway and Nord Road in Bakersfield.

4 Occupants Pronounced Dead

According to CHP officials, the Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on Nord Road toward Rosedale Highway when the driver failed to yield to a stop sign. The Toyota corolla continued and went into eastbound traffic where it collided with a semi-trailer truck. The corolla then became lodged underneath and was dragged nearly 50 feet before the truck driver was able to stop. All 4 occupants were pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The driver of the semi trick sustained no injuries. Both lanes of Rosedale Highway and Nord Avenue were shut down so CHP officials could conduct their investigation.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in this crash and while the investigation continues, some people are wondering if the intersection where the crash took place could be partially to blame. Dozens of local residents have expressed their frustration about the intersection to city council members. The intersection is nearly pitch-black at night, offering no stop lights and no street lights in the vicinity. Local residents say it’s an extreme safety hazard and that it has been for years despite them voicing their concerns.
